Stefan G. Bucher’s Daily Monster

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008
I have been increasingly obsessed with Stefan’s monsters over the past month or so and finally broke down and bought his book, 100 Days Of Monsters. The book is full of incredible illustrations along with stories about each monster that were submitted by guests on www.dailymonster.com. In addition, the book comes with a dvd full of videos of Stefan drawing each monster. If you do not pick up the book, I highly recommend checking out the other monster videos here.

“How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer” (Debbie Millman)

I came to really appreciate Debbie Millman after hearing her not only speak but also interview Mariam Bantjes at AIGA Nashville’s Think Tank this past fall. I have since become an avid listener of her podcast, Design Matters. Therefore, this book has been on my reading list since it came out last fall and I finally got around to knocking it out a couple of weeks ago. Despite the misleading title, the book is not really a “how to” book at all. Rather, Millman interviews twenty-one of today’s most influential designers. The book is a journey into their thought processes, first creative experiences, fears, hopes, pasts, futures, successes and failures. Each interview is completely captivating. Overall, the book is hard to put down. I especially enjoyed the conversations with Michael Bierut, Stefan Sagmeister and Massimo Vignelli. I highly recommend this book to other designers or anyone that is curious about the world of design.
